Nowadays many books are 'first edition' in paperback, traditionally they were always hardback for the first edition. A quick glance at the bestselling chart usually shows how the paper format rules the hardcover. Mass Market and TradeA 'mass market' is small, non-illustrated and inexpensive. A 'trade' is a standard-sized book, normally the same size as the previous hardcover edition. The trade paperbacks are more expensive, but they do last longer and are generally nicer to read given their size and illustrations. The HistoryIn 1935, English based publisher Penguin Books began the paperback revolution. It was an immediate financial success. They had color-coded covers for the various genres and consumers loved the paperbacks. In 1939, much the same thing happened in the USA, and then onto Canada in 1940's.
